NEF Funds 6 Week Art Programs for K-6
Thanks to the generous support of NEF, the Johnson School has put in place visiting artist programs for Kindergarten through 6th grade. Over the next 6 weeks Julie Duffy, who worked for many years at RAW ART in Lynn, and is an accomplished art therapist currently living in Acton, will hold art workshops on Friday mornings for grades 3 and 4. She will also do 20 minute, afternoon drop-in sessions, for the 2nd graders.
Also in grades Kindergarten through 2nd, as well as the 5th and 6th graders, Allison Jason, a former art teacher and Nahant resident, will work on Thursdays with the children, doing different forms of art. NEF hopes to continue its support through the spring with other visiting art programs that can be coordinated.
NEF Funds $5,000 in Teacher Grants for Fall 2010
The Nahant Education Foundation is pleased to announce the funding of five fall teacher grants for the Johnson Elementary School, totaling over $5,000. Two of these grants include much needed Science Kits with manipulatives for the 3rd and 4th graders. These hands on science kits will supplement the current Earth, Life Science, and Engineering components of the curriculum currently taught. The third grant, funds the renewal of the school's license for the popular Study Island computer program instigated last year, to help prepare students for state assessment testing (MCAS). This is a website that all children in grades 2nd-6th can use from home to support and supplement learning in school. A fourth grant will fund Teacher Resource Kits to prepare teacher's for professional development on the school's newly piloted math program called, "Everyday Math". The fifth grant will fund an interactive computer software program called "Board Maker Studio" for preschool through 6th grade, to assist in instruction for children with special needs.
The dramatic, and historically high 2010 MCAS scores, demonstrate the importance of all efforts, made by the Johnson School teachers, the administration, the students, as well as NEF and PTO’s financial support. Over the past two years the Nahant Education Foundation has dedicated itself to raising funds in support of our public elementary school. NEF has raised over $75,000 thanks to so many in Nahant that have so generously contributed, with $63,000 already given to the school in support of technology and teachers grants.
Just this past June, School Committee approved a 5 year Strategic Plan for the Johnson School, which implementation of, has already begun. NEF will support this initiative by continuing to fund innovative programs in our school that enhance children’s learning, and continue to increase our school's MCAS scores, until 100% of our students are scoring Proficient or Advanced.
Our success as a community, with a top rated, strong, vibrant school system, depends on all of us....parents, teachers, the administration, and the community as a whole. The Nahant Education Foundation has accomplished a lot in just two short years, but there's so much more to do! As the french writer Simone De Beauvoir once said, "One is not born a genius, one becomes a genius."
